When I first started coaching, about 20 years ago, I used to jokingly say “what I really want is for clients to find me and ask me to coach them. I can’t be assed with all this marketing stuff”.
Now I used the word “jokingly” not because I didn’t mean it but because I didn’t think it was possible. I thought I was being a bit of a princess and that was a bad thing.
Well, after many thousands of pounds spent on learning about marketing the right way and thousands of hours being bored out of my brains trying to implement it, my dream finally came true on Thursday. I enrolled my first, no effort at all, doesn’t know me from Adam, client.
He didn’t exactly knock on the front door, ring the bell and ask me to coach him but the whole thing transpired easily and seamlessly.
Here’s how it happened.
He mentioned in another context online that he could do with help with accountability.
I emailed him and said I could help.
He emailed me back and asked for some specific details – cost, time, examples etc.
I emailed back and said I didn’t really have any because I preferred to work all that out on a client by client basis but he could look at my website to get a feel for where I’m coming from and I included some glowing testimonials from people who’d done ‘Get It Done Days’ with me. I suggested we had a Skype call and take it from there.
We had a thoroughly enjoyable and interesting call at the end of which he asked if I would work with him again and I said “yes please” and we talked about how that might look.
This morning I realised my Princess dream had come true! Woo hoo!
It’s not that I’ve not had clients in the past who were easy to enroll. I have. It’s just that those people I’d either met in person or they were recommended by someone who already knew me or they’d been following me on the web.
This is the first out of the blue stranger, so to speak, and it feels marvelous!
So, what will I be taking from this?
Well, the old adage is true I think – overnight success doesn’t happen overnight. What made the difference here wasn’t the knowledge I had, or the strategy I had in place, it was the “work” I’ve done on listening to what’s right for me and then standing for it.
This is what’s different these days:
1. I’m happy with my life as it is. Coaching clients is an added bonus so I’m not attached to outcomes.
2. I’m not willing to do a bunch of stuff I don’t enjoy to create something different.
3. I’m exhausted with trying to get it right so I’m more willing to do things my own way, even when I’m not sure it’s the right thing to do because it doesn’t match what the experts say.

That is great you had a nice client today. This is a good beginning for you. Word by mouth is probably the best addvert and marketing yet.
